Pirate Nation: How to Earn in a GameFi Project Without Investing

by admin-wp

Pirate Nation is a blockchain-based GameFi project that allows players to earn real money — both with and without upfront investments. Backed by over $33 million in funding from major VC firms, the game is gaining momentum in the Web3 space.

What’s Behind the Project?

Pirate Nation runs on Apex, a new blockchain built specifically for Web3 gaming.
Both the game and the Apex chain are currently in testnet, which gives early players a real opportunity to earn token airdrops for in-game activity.

The project is now running its second airdrop season. The first round was extremely generous, and all signs point to continued rewards — not only from the game itself but also from the Apex blockchain, since Pirate Nation is the first flagship game on the Apex chain.

A key feature of Apex: all in-game assets are NFTs and recorded directly on the blockchain.

Gameplay Overview

  1. After signing up, players receive a free pirate character with random abilities and a basic ship.
  2. You’ll begin your journey on an island, completing quests, collecting resources, upgrading your ship and pirate, and battling both monsters (PvE) and other players (PvP).

All activity earns progress points — which are later used to calculate your share of future token rewards.

The game is time-efficient: around 30 minutes per day. Actions are limited by an energy system (you get 150 energy per day, which fully regenerates daily).

Pirate Classes & Abilities

Each pirate has two core characteristics:

🌊 Elemental Affinity:

Fire, Earth, Water, Air, Electricity — these determine how pirates interact in combat.
For example:

  • Water deals more damage to Fire, and receives less from it.
  • Fire is strong against Earth, and so on.

🧠 Combat Trait:

Each pirate has one of five special traits that influence their battle performance:

  • Attack Power – deals extra damage
  • Evasion – chance to dodge incoming attacks
  • Speed – increased chance to strike first
  • Accuracy – reduces missed hits
  • Health – improves ship HP and healing

Resource Collection & Crafting

The game features a multi-tiered crafting system based on resource gathering:

Tier 1 resources:

  • Cotton
  • Iron
  • Wood

These are used to create Tier 2 materials (oars, anchors, nets), which in turn become Tier 3 items (compass, spyglass, mermaid scale, etc.).

You can find raw resources while sailing around islands. They sparkle visually on the map, so they’re easy to spot.
Collecting them consumes energy — so you’ll need to plan your strategy.

You’ll also find gold chests across the map — the higher your pirate level, the more valuable the chests.

Quests & Rewards

There are several types of missions:

✅ Standard Quests

  • Require certain items and a bit of energy.
  • Rewards may be fixed or randomized. You can hover over mystery rewards to view drop chances for each item.

Example: To earn a map, you might need to complete a quest with a 20% chance of success. It requires a spyglass and a mermaid scale.

🎯 Tasks

These are mandatory if you want to qualify for token drop points. You’ll find them in the right panel of the interface.

💰 Bounty Quests

Require specific pirate teams and cost in-game currency to enter.
Usually not the most efficient — the rewards are random and often underwhelming, similar to a gamble mechanic.

Battles Against Mobs

Each day, players can engage in 5 standard battles and 5 advanced battles through the Gauntlet tab.
Accessing advanced mode requires spending 500 in-game coins, but the rewards are significantly greater — including more loot and valuable drop points.

Lost the battle? No problem — you can try again as many times as needed until you win.

Keep in mind: enemies get stronger with each fight, and the 5th battle in advanced mode can be especially challenging. A single misplay can cost you the round.

You can select a different pirate or ship for each battle by tapping on Deck 2 if you own multiple.

How Combat Works

Combat in Pirate Nation is a turn-based strategy card game, similar in feel to Axie Infinity or simplified Heroes of Might and Magic.

Battle Interface:

  • 💛 Yellow diamond: action points available for your turn (e.g. 6/6).
  • 🃏 You’ll see your full deck (15 cards) and the current draw.
  • ▶️ Play cards by dragging them onto enemies or yourself (for buffs).
  • ♦️ Above enemies: cards they plan to play next.
  • ✅ Below enemies: active status effects (buffs/debuffs).

To win, you’ll need to leverage your pirate’s strengths, understand your opponent’s tactics, and build a well-balanced deck.

Leveling Up Your Pirate

Quests and battles grant experience, which fills the blue progress bar.
Once the bar is full, you can level up by spending in-game currency.

Leveling up grants:

  • Drop points;
  • New battle cards;
  • Access to advanced deck-building.

Tip: always set your pirate as Captain — only captains earn XP.

Team Rank

At the top of your screen, you’ll see your Team Rank (yellow bar), which increases only through combat activity.

Why this matters:

  • At Rank 5, you unlock the referral program.
  • At Rank 10 (max), you can trade items and resources for real money on the marketplace.

Managing Your Card Deck

Each pirate can hold up to 40 cards, which are gradually unlocked as you level up.
Ships also have their own cards. Once you exceed 40 cards, you can customize your deck, removing less useful ones to optimize for battle.

⚠️ A poorly built deck is one of the top reasons players lose advanced fights.

Ship Upgrades

To improve your ship, visit the Shipyard on the game map.

At the shipyard, you can:

  • Add upgrades (e.g. cannons, armor);
  • Enhance ship appearance;
  • Level up your ship (up to Level 3);
  • Combine ships to create a more powerful version.

Each upgrade adds new battle cards.
Higher-level ships have more HP and better performance.

Upgrade Example:

  • Level 2: Requires 1 identical ship, 15,000 coins, and 1 special card.
  • Level 3: Requires 2 Level-2 ships, 25,000 coins, and 3 special cards.

Don’t have your own shipyard?
You can use someone else’s — they’ll earn 25% of your upgrade fee.

Marketplace

On the in-game marketplace, you can buy and sell:

  • Ships
  • Pirates
  • Items and resources

This lets you progress faster and earn more drop points.

Selling is only available from Team Rank 10 and above.

Final Thoughts

Pirate Nation is a promising early-stage play-to-earn project with real potential.
In Season 1, active players earned $1,500–$2,000 without investing.
Those who invested $10K–30K or more earned even higher returns.

Of course, there are no guarantees that Season 2 will deliver the same results — but the fundamentals are strong, and the outlook is optimistic.

My Personal Take

My current investment: $3,821
(Level 3 ship + Level 22 pirate)
