9 rules for productive remote work

by admin-wp

For most companies, having employees in the office remains a key requirement. However, there are those that view the shift to remote work positively. Based on research, employees tend to be more productive when working from home.

So, let’s look at 9 rules for productive work outside the office.

1. Separate your workspace.

First, you’ll need a quiet corner where you can work peacefully. Sometimes, for company management, it’s very important that you have an actual office. For example, you can repurpose an unused storage room or section off part of any room. Having a small, dedicated office space will make it much easier to focus and minimize distractions.

2. Furniture expenses.

What’s an office without furniture? No office at all. As much as you may want to save money, this is a necessary investment. Think of it as your contribution to the workspace where you’ll be spending full workweeks. Comfortable and ergonomic furniture significantly improves productivity too.

3. Chair and desk.

These are the most important pieces of furniture you’ll need. Start with something affordable, but make sure it is comfortable and supportive.

4. Workspace behind a door.

One of the biggest challenges of remote work is constant distractions. People may interrupt you with conversations, questions, or simply by lingering nearby. A door can save you from these interruptions. Any door will do — sliding or traditional — as long as it’s there. It will help you focus and handle important discussions without interference.

5. Equipment setup.

Almost half of our work relies on technology. That’s why it’s important to have high-speed internet, a reliable phone, and a high-performance computer. It may be tempting to save money here, but it’s not worth it. Technical failures can occur at the worst possible times. It’s better to have everything set up properly by a professional.

6. Lighting.

Lighting expenses may not seem critical, but they are still necessary. Many people overlook proper lighting and use basic lamps. Good lighting improves working conditions significantly. If you spend a lot of time working at a computer, it’s best to install lighting that reflects off the monitor gently, reducing eye strain.

7. Separate offices.

This rule applies to couples. If both of you work from home, it’s better to have two separate rooms. Each person should have their own workspace; otherwise, there’s a risk of a drop in productivity.

8. Don’t restrict your freedom.

Just because you have set up a home office doesn’t mean you must work only there. Use it when you need to concentrate and think deeply. Otherwise, feel free to work from any comfortable place in your home.

9. Storage.

No matter how functional your office is, over time, it can easily become cluttered. To prevent this, plan storage solutions ahead of time. Install a couple of shelves or place one or two cabinets. This way, everything will have its place.
